Natural Toothpaste Made at Home

When I read about all the ingredients that are in toothpaste that are harmful and even toxic, it makes me want to look into alternatives that I can use instead. Naturally Savvy has a list of the bad ingredients that are included in tooth paste and the effects that they have on your body, as well as alternatives you can use.
I have yet to find a toothpaste that I actually like. So making my own seems the only way to go. Not to mention, I like to make my own house hold needs. Toothpaste is the newest on my list. See ya, mass production, hello independent and natural living!

Now you know I wouldn't bring it up if I didn't have at least one recipe for you to use to make your own. Actually I have three, so lets get started. I would love to hear from anyone if you have more recipes to share. The more the merrier.

Basic Toothpaste
-hydrogen peroxide
-baking soda

Minty Toothpaste
-6 teaspoons baking soda
-1/3 teaspoon salt
-4 teaspoon glycerin
15 drops peppermint or wintergreen

Sensitive Teeth
-1/2 cup vegetable glycerin (base)
-1/2 cup cosmetic clay, white (mild abrasive)
-35-40 drops tincture of myrrh (gum inflammation)
-10 drops peppermint or spearmint or Pudinharra (fresh breath)
-7-8 drops clove essential oil (mild anesthetic)

There are is also a recipe for those of you with Gingivitis there is also a recipe for you as well on Pioneer Thinking. That should give you a place to start. Google searches will always bring up more, of course. There is always ten ways to do something.

There are some who are opposed to baking soda, for those of you. There is a recipe for a homemade natural toothpaste using soap nuts. Soap nuts can be used for a lot of things, including laundry detergent.

If you are looking for a whitening mouthwash, straight hydrogen peroxide for ten minutes a day works. A good suggestion that someone offered is to do this while taking a shower. Just make sure you don't swallow any when you tilt your head back to wash it! You don't want to be cleaning chunks out of the shower. Blech!
