Winter Cleaning, More Important Than Spring?

I've been going through everything in my house starting from the back and working my way up. A cleansing of sorts, tossing away anything that is not serving a purpose. Clothes that make me feel frumpy, gone. Anything that has any negative feelings or emotion tied to them, gone. Some of these items were as small as a votive candle holder and a picture hanging on the wall.
Anything that doesn't make you happy or feel good should just go. Why not. Your surroundings are a reflection of yourself. Your surroundings also influence the way you feel. Now that winter is coming you will be spending that much more time indoors staring at any clutter or unnecessary items that have outlived their time in your living space. There should be a winter cleaning
.
We are constantly growing and evolving as people, shouldn't your living space reflect this. Just because you've had a certain nick nack or dust collector as I call them, since you were a little girl/boy doesn't mean that you have to keep it for the rest of your life. All you end up with is a lot of clutter or a lot of boxes full of mementos that sit in storage. What purpose is that serving? If you want to have the memory forever, take a picture to remember your precious memento that you've had since your first Christmas. Better yet give it to a family member who will love it and appreciate that it used to be yours, making the gift all that more special. Children think that items of their beloved family are very special. I remember looking at nick nacks or decorations of my moms, my grandmother and grandfather and thinking that they were very important. If I'd of been given something that was theirs I would have felt very privileged.
This is the perfect time to get your house in a positive condition before the winters are settled in. You may find a cast aside book or project that was stuffed in a closet and forgotten. I found puzzles that haven't been done yet, a Lite Brite that I've had since I was a child and brought home from my own parents attic. Something that I couldn't wait till my son was old enough to play with, went completely forgotten in my hallway closet. Games I forgot I had, unfinished sewing projects. Plenty of stuff to keep me occupied for the winter.
But one of the key things to remember is clearing out some negative energy from your home. Winter time has always been a time of reflecting and regrouping. What kind of baggage do you have hidden in your closets? Do some soul searching and drop the material as well as psychological baggage. There is a saying that goes; clutter in the home is clutter in the mind. Time to make this a yearly ritual and break loose bonds that keep you from enjoying life the way it should be. We are never the same person that we were five, ten, a year ago, so why live the same life from five, ten, a years ago.

KUDOS! This was an excellent post! And to top it all off, what else do you have to do in Winter when it's too cold to be outdoors? The cleaning itself will give you plenty to do until you find unfinished projects, especially if this is your first time, or you only do it once every few years. Again I say, KUDOS!

I know. I always have done some spring cleaning, but it was SPRING! and I wanted to be outside. It is nice to open the windows and let in fresh air, but I would clean up just what I was too lazy to do in the winter which was anything that had to do with the outside. Sweeping of the porches, etc.

So eloquently put. Never thought to take a picture of something for a memory instead of holding onto it. I'll no longer feel guilty about letting it go. I too have things forgotten in closets or stored in boxes. Thanks for putting new perspective on things!
