Would You Survive It?

With the scare last night over gas shortages. People waited in line for sometimes over an hour. How will people handle it if we ran out of gas? Americans are not used to being without. We take for granted that there is a twenty four hour access to most anything we want. It makes me wonder, now that there is a possibility of a gas shortage. Has anyone called around and started car pools to help conserve limited resources? Sure you may not be the best of friends at work or out of work, but there is a greater need. These will be the same people that cry the loudest when they've run out of gas. They will demand that the government do something about this. How can they survive with no gas to get to work. But, did they even try to conserve and use what they had wisely? Like a child who wolfs down his candy from Easter and then gets mad and thinks it's unfair because that brother/sister still has candy and he doesn't.

At the first onset of rising gas prices and talk of a recession. I started living as if we are already in it. Trying to spend as little as possible, save as much as I can. When I go to the store I try to get enough to last me two weeks at least (I'm working on longer periods), saving on gas. I am not going to wait for things to get desperate before I start living smarter. I'm living smarter now. Being prepared NOW. I'm not going to wait until I have to start picking between which bills to pay (if times get as bad as they predict), or watch my bank account and savings disappear.

I watch so many people around me, family and friends, still buying things they don't need. Cute new coffee mugs, or expensive candles that were on sale. Video games for the kids (or sometimes the husband), spending a lot of money to throw a big cook out. I've mentioned to one family member before "I thought that you were trying to save money?" The response "Well it was on sale!" Sure it was twenty percent off, but did you NEED it.

How would you handle it if the worst fears come true and we DO run out of gas, we DO hit a recession worse than imagined. Would you be able to survive? Do you have enough saved up to miss work until there is gas available again? Would you be willing to walk or ride a bike to get to work or go to the store if you lived close enough?

Those who were not prepared may be the ones crying the loudest. Why doesn't the government do something about it. I ask you this, Why didn't YOU do something about it? This isn't a natural disaster that came in and destroyed everything in a weekend. There has been talk in the news about hard times to come for a long time. So, I ask you, how are you handling it? Would you survive?
