Dawn Dish Soap-The Silent Killer

For as long as dish soap has been in use, so many people never even realize that death awaits in this bottle. Millions have been killed, so why is it that you don't see this in the news? Surely the public would want to know that Dawn dish soap has produced such multitude of deaths.

The reason this isn't being shouted from the rooftops? Because the deaths are to ants and fleas. Pest in the garden have been slaughtered as well. There is so much more this simple product can do, so let's get to it.

ANIMALS

  • ANT KILLER- As I stated before this is one heck of an ant killer. I've been using it for years and it will kill them almost instantly. Which leave an ant graveyard left to be cleaned up, but hey. The only thing it can't handle are the huge carpenter ants that are almost half an inch long. Those ants are so big, would you think they could almost be walked on a leash. It has been reputed that it will also deter ants if you spray the area and leave it to dry. Personally I haven't found this to be true. I have tried it several times with stronger and stronger soap solutions and it simply never worked for me. I have never used any kind of measurements to make it I just squirt some soap into the water bottle. This solution is non-toxic so you can use it safely around kids, pets, and elderly with no worries.

  • FLEA SHAMPOO-This is another proven trick that I have used for years. Use it straight from the bottle as you would any shampoo and it really kills the fleas. You will have to comb them out as they don't all get rinsed away and it's pretty nasty looking at a bunch of dead fleas in the animals fur. Something to remember. Repeat baths will need to be used as it does not kill any flea eggs that may be harbored in the fur. It is safe to use on kittens and puppies that are to young for flea medication, ferrets as well. Just remember that this is not a tear free shampoo and you will need to use a conditioner if your pet has dry skin or coat.

    OTHER

  • INSECTICIDAL SOAP-Organic gardeners rejoice, now you don't have to pay outrageous prices for insecticidal soap, you can make your own. Just take 1tsp. veg. oil, (it has been suggested that sunflower oil is the best, you can make your own decision), 1tsp Dawn soap and 1 pint of water. Or you can use 1tbsp. oil, 1tbsp. soap, to 1 gallon water. This should be applied every three days for 3-4 applications as it will not kill the eggs and you will have to break the cycle to get rid of them all. If you live in very hot climates it is best to apply it in the evening or after the sun is no longer shining on the plants as they could get sun burned.

  • GNAT TRAP-You can make your own trap to get rid of those pesky gnats by filling a bowl with apple cider and adding a few drops of dish soap, cover the bowl with plastic wrap and poke a small hole in the plastic. This is very effective, I am going to try it with other fluids such as regular juice or something that would be a substitute for apple cidar. I know I don't have any cidar laying around.

  • TAR REMOVER-If your little furred one comes home with tar in their hair you can use dawn dish soap to clean it out.

  • OIL SPILLS-I know most everyone has seen the Dawn commercial showing volunteers cleaning animals after an oil spill. You can apply this to your life as well if your pets gets into oil from a garage or driveway.

HOME

  • STAIN REMOVER-Apply directly to the stain immediately after an accident and it can remove blood, lipstick, grease, chocolate and any other stain that contains some type of oil.

  • SOAP SCUM-Cleaning your shower with straight Dawn is said to "eat" right through soap scum and clean excellently. I also recommend using a plastic scrubbing pad, it won't scratch the shower and really makes it easier.

  • ICE PACKS-You can fill a baggy with the dish soap and freeze it. The soap stays cold longer than ice. It would be best to use freezer bags or double zip baggies to prevent any leaks.

  • OIL ON DRIVEWAYS OR GARAGE FLOORS-Use cat litter to soak up excess oil and follow up with the dish soap using a scrubbing brush to clean off the rest of the oil.

  • TOOLS-Soak greasy tools in soapy water to break down and remove any grease. Many mechanics say that it prevents their tools from rusting as well.

  • REFRIGERATORS-Cuts through the mess without leaving any chemical smells behind to absorb into your food. It is also none toxic, so you can feel safer about any contact with food. 1/8 cup soap to a gal. of hot water

  • FLOORS-A safe and effective way for washing the floors. Will really cut through any grease that may have splattered on the floor from cooking. Darn bacon!

  • LEATHER COUCHES-You can use Dawn soapy water to safely clean your leather furniture. Just make sure that you put a leather conditioner on afterwards to return oils back to the leather. This could go with any leather gloves or items.

  • CAGES AND KIDS-No need to buy expensive non-toxic cage or kiddy cleaners. Just use your ant spray (I'm talking about soapy water in a spray bottle) and clean with that.

Remember to shake up the bottle before use. If you happen to see any to see while your cleaning zap them while your at and kill two birds with one stone (or spray).

  • GRASS-Spraying down your lawn with soapy water will clean off the grass allowing them to absorb more sunlight and fertilizer. Hopefully it's organic fertilizer. Dawn dish soap is biodegradable so you need not worry about any residue left.

BEAUTY

  • SHAMPOO RESIDUE-Wash your hair with Dawn dish soap to get rid of shampoo build up in your hair. Suggested use is once a month.

  • MANICURE-What is in that little blue dish you soak your nails in? Dish soap, believe it or not. It softens the cuticles and removes the oils from your fingers and nails allowing the fingernail polish to work more effectively and cover better.
OTHER

  • BUBBLES!-10 parts water to 1 part soap. For sturdier bubbles add 1/8 part white corn syrup such as Karo

  • FIRE FIGHTING-Ever see firefighters using foamy water to put out flames. It is soap. Adding soap to the water breaks down the surface tension allowing the water to penetrate into wood, cloth, and other tiny spaces for faster flame fighting (say that ten times fast). The deeper penetration helps prevent the flames from rising back up.
  • COUPONS-You can get coupons directly from the manufacturer. Hooray!

Very informative post, I throughly enjoyed it and learned something new (and reminded me of some things I'd forgotten!).

I knew about the flea use, and the ant killer use, and the stain fighting use, but I had no idea about all the other uses, like using it on your plants as pesticide, or using it to put out fire. Thank you for this extra insight and I will be keeping these things in mind the next time our flowers start to look a little, well, feasted on!

I'm testing out the gnat trap as we speak, I woke up this morning with them everywhere. I didn't have any apple cider so I just poured in some of my son's apple juice. Maybe after it sits for awhile it will be nice and ripe. I'll let you know how it works, I'd say you could use any kind of juice. I poked five holes intead of one as well. I just couldn't help myself.

Dawn contains triclosan that has been linked to organ failure. read more at www.ewg.org

I checked out the site and looked up triclosan, from what the site said it is contained in antibacterial products, including dish soap. I never use antibacterial soap, but thank you for the info. Always good to know.

You can veiw the page here at http://www.ewg.org/phthalates/HowtoreduceyourexposuretoPhthalates

The info with triclosan is down the page, but there is other useful info on there as well.

As for the gnat traps, using soap is totally unnecessary.
